Element Five
Teachers Create and Maintain Safe and Challenging Learning Environments Through the Use of Classroom Management Skills
I have been able to develop a strong rapport with students through my previous professional experiences that has allowed them to feel safe and valued regardless of cultural, ethnic, religious and socio-economic background. This has allowed students to feel confident in participating in all facets of schooling (see Appendix G). (5.1.1, 5.1.2, 5.1.3, 5.1.4)
I have also developed awareness of appropriate safety procedures that are required during school excursions. A Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) excursion to Warragamba Dam included a site safety profile sheet that listed the possible physical risks to students and staff (see Appendix H). (5.1.7).
I will seek to develop my own behaviour management strategy during my next professional experience and not just rely upon the established class management plan. This will be beneficial to my personal development by allowing opportunity to make mistakes and reflect upon any strengths and weaknesses as a means to enhance my ability to manage students effectively. (5.1.5, 5.1.6).
I need to firstly ask permission from my teacher mentor to implement a personal student management system as they may or may not be comfortable with a different system. Next, I would need to observe the student management system my teacher mentor and their colleagues implement so that I am better able to adapt and implement a system that is suitable for my circumstances. Lastly, I would also need to allow enough time for students to respond to the new system and reflect upon its merits before passing judgement as to its efficacy.
I believe that students should be valued as key members of the class at all times. It is of utmost importance that students should feel safe to participate in all activities within the classroom, be valued for the different experiences and knowledge they bring and be allowed to some autonomy as part of a democratic classroom. By doing so a quality learning environment is created whereby students strive to achieve their best knowing that tyhey have supportive peers and teachers (DET, 2008, p. 10).
